The Taylor’s Island Preservation and Management Committee, created in December 2005, exists as an official Town Committee to advise the Shelter Island Town Board on the preservation and use of Taylor’s Island. The Committee meets at Town Hall at 9:00 A.M. on the second Tuesday of every month, April through October. The S.I. Town official website posts minutes of the Committee. A complete archive of the minutes is here.
The Town adopted its Parks Master Plan in 2006 listing Taylor’s Island as the number one park priority (Page 22). Taylor’s Island is also included on pages 5, 8, 12, 26.
Working with the Committee and the Taylor’s Island Foundation, our Town has:
Received a grant for the Historic Structure Report
Signed a lease with the Taylor’s Island Foundation
Replaced the Island’s two critical bulkheads
Placed the Smith-Taylor Cabin on the NYS and National Registers of Historic Places
Received a $110,600 matching grant for the Cabin
Installed a propane electric generator at the Cabin
